Panic at Maximos as wave of anger over Tempi fuels instability scenario
The massive sea of people that flooded the center of Athens and the major cities of Greece sent a message to the government and the Prime Minister that three years after the crime of Tempi, the public has not forgotten either the accident or the government’s responsibilities or the fact that justice has not been delivered where it should have been.
The government’s responsibilities
The large gatherings in all cities, with more than 100.000 people assembled in Athens alone, as well as in major centers abroad where there is a Greek diaspora, show that there is a current that questions the perceived dominance of the Mitsotakis government and, regardless of ideology, believes that its responsibilities are significant.
This includes the policies stemming from contract 717, its parliamentary responsibilities in not allowing a preliminary investigation committee with testimony from Karamanlis and Triantopoulos, as well as its administrative responsibilities regarding the backfilling of the accident site, and of course the responsibilities of the Justice system, which three years later has not begun the judicial investigation of the accident.
The public rose from the couch to protest
The most important element is that the massive mobilization of people, mainly apolitical groups of the population moved by the grief of the parents of the victims, is, according to analysts, perhaps the critical factor that could alter political balances.
The political activation of Maria Karystianou, who did not speak at the Athens gathering as she did not want to appropriate the crowd, yet received the public’s affection, may be the decisive difference in the upcoming national elections, as there are indications that she is activating a segment of the population that did not vote and that public opinion polls cannot accurately measure.
The 30% is misleading, ND below 25%
According to analysts, polls show New Democracy in voting intention at around 25% and, because it is the leading party, an estimated vote share of around 30%.
However, this is misleading. On the one hand, the traditional opposition has convinced only its party mechanisms.
On the other hand, new parties emerging on the scene will reshuffle the deck.
What pollsters cannot precisely capture, however, is the large, often silent public that seeks political change, the anti system current that demands the dismantling of the old political system, and the only option on this basis appears to be Maria Karystianou, who is not a professional politician and has not served this system.
One thing is certain.
The continued public mobilization, as the trial for Tempi has begun and as the announcement of a new party by Karystianou in May 2026 approaches, will change the landscape. It may not alter the fact that ND will be the leading party, but it will cut several points from ND and from all opposition parties, resulting in no single party majority but rather massive fragmentation that will inevitably lead to a special conditions or special purpose government with all parties aligned against ND of K. Mitsotakis.
