A message of strength was sent by the Russian President Vladimir Putin to the West, declaring that Moscow will ensure by every means the neutral status of Ukraine, a promise that NATO had given to the Russian governments already from the 1990s. Russia insists on the fulfillment of the promises it had received in written form already in the 1990s, that the North Atlantic Alliance would not expand eastward, as the Russian President Vladimir Putin reminded in an interview with the television channel India Today, sending a message of strength to NATO. “We are not asking for anything unusual or unexpected, nothing heaven sent. We simply insist on the fulfillment of the promises that were already made to us. They were not invented yesterday. They were given to Russia in the 1990s. No expansion of NATO eastward, this had been publicly stated”, Putin said. The Russian President noted that since then there have been several phases of alliance expansion, culminating in the accession of Ukraine to NATO. “This is absolutely unacceptable for us and constitutes a serious threat to Russia. Let us remember that NATO is a military political alliance and Article 5 of the Washington Treaty a military confrontation with one NATO member is considered a confrontation with all members, which established NATO, has not been abolished. This is a threat to us. No one takes us seriously”, he explained. And finally, when Ukraine gained independence, few remember what the first document was that ratified it as a state entity, Putin continued. “It was the Declaration of State Sovereignty and Independence of Ukraine. This constitutes the basis of Ukrainian sovereignty and modern statehood. And it clearly states that Ukraine is a neutral country”, the Russian President concluded.

“The Russian campaign in Ukraine ensures the security of our people and the people in Donbass”

The special military operation is being conducted for the protection of the people in Donbass and the national interests of Russia, emphasized the Russian President Vladimir Putin in an interview with the Indian television channel. “You know, it is not about victory the way you put it. The issue is that Russia is trying to do whatever is possible to protect its interests, its people who live there, its traditional values, the Russian language and so on. By the way, it also protects the faith that has developed in these lands for centuries”, he stressed, responding to a question about what result victory would mean for Russia and what its “red lines” are.

West to be pitied, it trapped itself on all fronts

“One can only pity the Western countries now, as they have led themselves into a dead end on so many fronts”, said the Russian President Vladimir Putin during a conversation with journalists of the television channels Aaj Tak and India Today in the Kremlin. “I think that the collective West can only be pitied at this moment. I say this seriously. They have led themselves into dead end situations on many fronts”, he said.

Zelensky was elected promising not to wage war but… he reversed himself

Vladimir Putin argued that Volodymyr Zelensky failed to adhere to his pre election promise to end the war. He clarified that Russia did not annex Crimea, but “rushed to the aid of the inhabitants of the peninsula and could not have done otherwise”. Regarding the special military operation, the Russian President emphasized that it is being conducted with the purpose of protecting the people in Donbass and the national interests of Russia. The goal of Moscow, as he said, is to end the war that “the West launched against it using Ukraine”. Furthermore, he made it clear that Moscow does not deny Ukraine the right to ensure its own security, but not at the expense of Russia’s security. Concluding, Putin noted that Ukraine must understand that the best way to resolve the conflict is through negotiations, while he underlined Russia’s firm intention to always protect its interests and its people.

“The United States continues to buy nuclear fuel from Russia”

Referring to relations with Washington, Putin expressed his regret about the situation in which the Collective West has found itself. “I think that the Western community can only be pitied at this moment. I say this seriously. They have led themselves into dead end situations on many fronts”, he said, emphasizing that many American companies wish to return to Russia. In a notable remark, he referred to nuclear fuel purchases by the United States and noted, “The United States continues to buy nuclear fuel from Russia, so it is unclear why they believe that India cannot buy Russian energy resources”. He added that the resumption of economic cooperation between Russia and the United States would be beneficial for both countries, emphasizing that the Russian economy is open and that Moscow has never imposed additional customs duties as Washington has. Asked about Trump, the Russian leader stated that he never evaluates other leaders, but noted that Trump desires a quick end to the conflict in Ukraine, even for humanitarian reasons.

NATO retreats, the forces of the Global South are emerging

Subsequently, the Russian President Putin described China and India as close friends of Russia, relationships that the country values highly. He emphasized the uninterrupted flow of Russian oil supplies to India and the production of petroleum products for the consumers of Russian raw materials. He noted that cooperation in the energy sector had begun long before the events in Ukraine, with the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant proving to be an extremely effective project. Finally, he emphasized military cooperation with India and the joint focus on technology, with artificial intelligence being one of the promising sectors. At an institutional level, Moscow insists on the fulfillment of NATO promises for non expansion eastward that were given in the 1990s. Regarding the creation of a single currency within the BRICS, Putin stressed that it should not be done hastily in order “to avoid serious mistakes”. Finally, he referred to the emergence of new powerful development centers, mainly in the countries of the Global South, such as India and Indonesia.

Russia does not seek the restoration of the USSR

Regarding the Russian economy, the authorities are generally satisfied with the situation, the strong man of the Kremlin noted meaningfully. He also declared satisfaction with the way the Russian intelligence services operate, avoiding evaluating those of other countries. On historical issues, Putin ruled out the restoration of the USSR, saying that the search for those responsible for its collapse is futile, as “the system as a whole proved to be unsustainable”. He accused the West of using exaggerations and propaganda about Russian attempts to restore its empire in order to frighten its population. He reminded, finally, that the city of Novgorod was the capital of Ancient Rus before the title was transferred to Kyiv.

“It is too early for an assessment…”

Closing, in response to a question about the Middle East issue, he stated that Russia does not promote any special plan, as the key to resolution lies in the implementation of the adopted UN resolutions and the creation of an independent Palestinian state. Regarding Afghanistan, he acknowledged that the current authorities are making efforts to combat terrorism and drug production. Finally, on a personal note, the Russian President noted that it is still too early to make an assessment of his life, emphasizing that “everything has an end, and only God is eternal”.
