Trump ordered preparations for an invasion of Greenland, generals react – NATO risks collapse
A political and military crisis is unfolding regarding the status of Greenland, directly affecting the relations of the United States with its European allies and NATO.
According to British media outlets, Trump’s inner circle is discussing military and political options to exert pressure on the autonomous territory of Denmark, while the United Kingdom and other NATO countries are seeking ways to limit escalation by strengthening NATO’s presence in the Arctic.
The threat of an American invasion before Russians and Chinese act
According to the Daily Mail, Trump instructed Special Operations Command to develop a plan for a possible invasion of Greenland.
The hardest line is being promoted by representatives of the radical MAGA wing within the president’s environment, particularly by Homeland Security Advisor Stephen Miller.
However, according to the British Daily Mail, this initiative has encountered resistance from the top United States military leadership.
Sources report that the presidential administration is so inspired by the success of the operation to capture Venezuela’s leader Nicolás Maduro that it wants to seize Greenland quickly “before Russia or China take any action.”
The midterm elections on 3 November 2026 and the risk of NATO collapse
British diplomats cited by the publication believe that Trump is also driven by the desire to divert the attention of American voters from the state of the United States economy ahead of the midterm elections later this year, after which the Republicans could lose control of Congress.
However, such a radical move, the military seizure of Greenland, would place Trump at odds with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and “would essentially lead to the collapse of NATO,” according to the Daily Mail.
An analysis by diplomats referenced in the Daily Mail publication describes a “worst case scenario” in which the alliance could be “destroyed from within.”
The plan… dissolution of NATO
“Some European officials suspect that this is the real objective of the radical MAGA faction around Trump.
Given that Congress will not allow Trump to withdraw from NATO, the occupation of Greenland could force Europeans to abandon NATO.
If Trump wants to dismantle NATO, this may be the most convenient way to do it,” a diplomatic source states.
Order to the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) but the generals reacted
The United States president is reported to have already given an order to the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) to explore military options, but the Joint Chiefs of Staff opposed this, citing the illegality of such a move and the lack of support from Congress.
One source claims that the generals tried to redirect the president’s attention to “less controversial steps,” such as intercepting tankers from Russia’s “shadow fleet” or possible new strikes on Iran.
Some sources describe an escalation scenario in which the United States could use military force or political coercion to sever Greenland’s ties with Denmark.
Compromise scenario and the critical NATO summit on 7 July
A “compromise scenario” is also being examined: Denmark would grant the United States full military access to the island and close it to Russia and China, formalizing the access that the Americans already have.
One of the documents notes that, for internal political reasons, Trump may begin with the hardline scenario and then move toward compromise. European officials fear that the window of opportunity for such an action is closing by the summer and suggest that the NATO summit on 7 July could be a critical moment.
NATO mission to Greenland
Meanwhile, according to the Telegraph, the United Kingdom is consulting with European partners regarding the possible deployment of NATO forces to Greenland.
These discussions are seen as an effort to prevent further escalation, while at the same time strengthening security in the Arctic region.
According to the Telegraph, British officials met with their German and French counterparts in recent days to begin preliminary planning. The options under consideration are at an early stage and could include the deployment of British troops, ships, and aircraft to protect the island from potential threats from Russia and China.
European countries hope that a strengthened NATO presence will persuade Trump to abandon the idea of annexing Greenland.
In such a case, the United States president could present this as a victory for American taxpayers, arguing that Europe bears the main share of the financial burden of ensuring security in the Atlantic and the Arctic.
Sources from the British government note that Keir Starmer takes the threats from Russia and China in the region “extremely seriously” and shares the need to strengthen the position there.
US sanctions plan
The Telegraph also reports that the European Union is discussing possible retaliation if Washington rejects the proposal for the deployment of NATO forces.
According to sources, the EU may consider imposing sanctions against American companies.
Potential targets include technology companies Meta (designated as extremist in Russia and banned), Google, Microsoft, and X, as well as American banks and financial institutions operating in the European market.
Reconsideration of American bases in Europe
A more radical option, according to the publication, includes reviewing the status of American military bases in Europe.
The United States Secretary of State, Rubio, is expected to hold talks with the Danish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lars Leke Rasmussen, next week.
European diplomats hope that this dialogue will have a deterrent effect on the White House and will reduce the risk of further escalation around Greenland.
The EU fears an exchange of Greenland for Ukraine.
Some EU officials fear that United States President Trump could take Greenland as part of an agreement on Ukraine, reports Politico.
“Some European officials fear that Trump’s team may try to acquire Greenland as part of a broader deal on Ukraine,”
Trump is unlikely to make such a deal soon, but this could change, said a senior White House official.
“It’s like a business deal,” the official explained.
